Air Vice Marshal shares insights on Air Defence Operations at Army War College

In a significant step towards fostering jointness among India’s armed forces, Air Vice Marshal Ashok Raj Thakur, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations – Air Defence) at Air Headquarters, delivered a comprehensive briefing to officers attending the Higher Command Course (HCC) at the Army War College (AWC), Mhow.

The interaction focused on “Air Defence Operations in the Indian Air Force,” highlighting the IAF’s evolving operational philosophy in an era of complex multi-domain threats. Air Vice Marshal Thakur provided deep insights into critical enablers such as Air Domain Awareness and robust Command-Control Architecture, which together facilitate effective Whole of Nation Approach (WONA) integration.

Drawing from his extensive operational experience, including recognition through the Yudh Sewa Medal (YSM) and Vayu Medal (VM) for distinguished service, the senior IAF officer emphasised how integrated sensor networks, real-time data fusion, and advanced decision-support systems are enhancing the IAF’s ability to maintain dominance in the air domain. These capabilities allow for seamless coordination not only within the Air Force but across Army, Navy, and civil stakeholders, ensuring a unified national response to emerging aerial threats ranging from manned aircraft and drones to ballistic and cruise missiles.

The Higher Command Course at AWC, a premier tri-service institution, prepares Colonel and equivalent-rank officers from all three services for higher leadership roles by emphasising joint operational doctrines, strategic planning, and inter-service synergy. Interactions such as this underscore the Indian military’s commitment to collaborative warfighting concepts amid evolving regional security dynamics.
