Vice Admiral Pradeep Chauhan (Retd), AVSM & Bar, VSM, Director General of the National Maritime Foundation, delivered a comprehensive address on ‘Security in the Indo-Pacific Region & India’ at the ongoing Higher Command Course at the Army War College (AWC). His insights offered senior military officers a nuanced understanding of the evolving maritime landscape and India’s proactive role in ensuring regional stability.
In his lecture, Vice Admiral Chauhan outlined the multifaceted challenges confronting the Indo-Pacific, including territorial disputes, freedom of navigation concerns, and the growing influence of extra-regional powers. He emphasised the strategic importance of the region, which accounts for a significant share of global trade and energy flows, making it a focal point for geopolitical competition.
The veteran naval officer also highlighted key opportunities for India, stressing the need for robust maritime domain awareness, enhanced naval capabilities, and deeper multilateral partnerships. He underscored India’s approach rooted in the principles of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), advocating for inclusive growth, respect for international law, and collaborative security mechanisms like QUAD and IONS.
Drawing from his extensive experience, Vice Admiral Chauhan called for a balanced strategy that integrates diplomatic, economic, and military dimensions. He urged the officers to view the Indo-Pacific not merely as a theatre of competition but as a canvas for cooperative security architecture.
The session was highly interactive, with participants engaging in discussions on India’s evolving maritime doctrine and its implications for joint operations. Such engagements at premier institutions like AWC play a vital role in shaping future military leadership’s strategic thinking.
On this occasion, AWC Commandant Lt Gen Ajay Chandpuria, Higher Command Wing Commander Maj Gen SS Kartikeya along with other senior officers of the AWC were also present. Lt Gen Chandpuria presented memento to Vice Admiral Pradeep Chauhan after the lecture.
