In a landmark step for India’s defence self-reliance, Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) has manufactured and successfully test-fired the first AK-203 assault rifle built entirely with Indian components and materials. Nicknamed ‘Sher’, the prototype underwent firing trials, including burst firing, at the company’s Korwa facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. Initial results have been described as encouraging.

Major General SK Sharma, CEO and Managing Director of IRRPL, called it a moment of immense pride and said, “Every single component and every input material going into this rifle has been sourced from Indian industry. This is not merely localisation of selected components; it is true, end-to-end 100 per cent genuine indigenisation.” The achievement completes the shift from imported assembly under the 2019 India-Russia joint venture to full domestic production.
The AK-203, chambered in 7.62×39mm, delivers substantial firepower suited to the modern battlefield. It offers an effective range of up to 400–800 metres, a cyclic rate of approximately 700 rounds per minute, and a standard 30-round magazine. Its gas-operated, rotating-bolt mechanism ensures high reliability across extreme conditions—from high-altitude mountains and deserts to jungles and urban terrain. Improved ergonomics, an adjustable folding stock and Picatinny rails for optics and accessories enhance accuracy and versatility compared with older designs.
These attributes make ‘Sher’ highly relevant for the Indian Army. It is intended to replace the ageing INSAS rifle, addressing long-standing concerns over reliability and stopping power. The 7.62mm cartridge provides greater lethality and barrier penetration, critical in both conventional warfare and counter-insurgency operations. A fully indigenous supply chain further ensures uninterrupted availability during prolonged conflicts.
Additional prototypes are being prepared for formal Army trials in September 2026, covering user evaluation, quality assurance and environmental testing. IRRPL aims for a production rate of one rifle every 100 seconds and expects to advance delivery of roughly 601,000 rifles by nearly a year.
This milestone under Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat strengthens operational readiness while reducing external dependence, positioning the AK-203 as a reliable backbone for India’s infantry forces.
