The Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent has arrived in Australia’s Northern Territory for ‘Exercise Pitch Black 2026’, one of the Indo-Pacific region’s premier multinational air combat drills. Hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), the exercise runs from July 20 to August 7, 2026, across RAAF Bases Darwin, Tindal, and Amberley. It brings together air forces from 19 nations, over 100 aircraft, and thousands of personnel in complex, combat-like scenarios designed to test interoperability in one of the world’s largest military training areas.

This marks a significant milestone for the IAF as it deploys its advanced Dassault Rafale multirole fighters for the first time in the exercise. Previously, India participated with Su-30MKI fighters in the 2018, 2022, and 2024 editions. The Rafale’s sophisticated sensors, beyond-visual-range capabilities, and electronic warfare systems will allow Indian pilots to engage in high-intensity operations alongside assets from the United States, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, and other partners.
Exercise Pitch Black, a biennial event since the 1980s, emphasises large-force employment, offensive and defensive counter-air missions, night operations, and network-centric warfare. Its vast, unpopulated training airspace provides an ideal environment for realistic training that few other exercises can match. Australian officials have highlighted its role in enhancing collective security and regional stability amid evolving Indo-Pacific challenges.
Strategic Depth in the Indo-Pacific
India’s robust participation underscores the deepening defence partnership with Australia under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Quad framework. It reflects New Delhi’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, where multilateral exercises build trust, refine tactics, and improve joint operational readiness. For the IAF, the drill offers invaluable exposure to diverse aircraft types, communication protocols, and command structures from leading air forces.
With approximately 150 Indian personnel involved, the exercise facilitates the exchange of best practices while sharpening the IAF’s ability to project power and integrate seamlessly in multinational coalitions. This aligns with India’s broader strategy of balancing self-reliance in defence capabilities with meaningful international cooperation.
As global attention remains focused on maintaining stability in the region, Exercise Pitch Black 2026 serves as a powerful demonstration of like-minded nations’ resolve. The IAF’s “Ready, Capable, Focused” approach not only enhances its operational edge but also reinforces India’s growing role as a key security provider in the Indo-Pacific.
The exercise will conclude with community engagement events, including the Mindil Beach Flying Display and RAAF Darwin Open Day, showcasing the collaborative spirit that defines this landmark drill.
