In a textbook demonstration of rapid response and operational readiness, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) successfully executed ‘Operation Lancer’ to assist the distressed NUC vessel MV Pyra, averting a potential maritime disaster in India’s strategically vital eastern seaboard.
Upon receiving a distress call from the vessel, which had suffered a complete propulsion failure and was drifting uncontrollably, the ANC promptly activated its resources. Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard ships, supported by three tugs, were swiftly deployed to the scene. The coordinated effort resulted in the safe anchoring of MV Pyra in India’s territorial waters off Great Nicobar Island (GNI). A naval technical team boarded the vessel immediately to provide on-site engineering assistance.

The operation not only ensured the safety of life at sea but also prevented a possible grounding that could have triggered an environmental catastrophe in the ecologically sensitive Andaman Sea region.
This incident underscores the ANC’s critical role as the guardian of one of India’s most strategically important island chains, which lies astride key sea lanes in the Indo-Pacific. The swift response highlights the tri-service command’s high state of alertness and its integrated operational capabilities involving naval assets, Coast Guard units, and specialized support vessels.
The Indian Navy and Coast Guard have a long and commendable history of rendering assistance to vessels in distress across the Indian Ocean Region. In July 2025, the Coast Guard rescued two crew members from the US-flagged sailing yacht *Sea Angel*, which was stranded near Indira Point off the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In another recent operation under ANC coordination, fishermen adrift for days in rough seas were successfully located and brought to safety. These missions reflect India’s commitment to acting as a net security provider in the maritime domain, extending help to both Indian and foreign vessels regardless of flag.
Defence analysts view such operations as vital confidence-building measures that enhance India’s image as a responsible maritime power while strengthening operational synergy between the Navy and Coast Guard in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) scenarios.
