In an unprecedented move that underscores the growing convergence between India’s defence assets and critical national functions, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been tasked with the secure transportation of question papers for the upcoming NEET-UG re-examination scheduled for June 21.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting held on May 28 at the residence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The meeting was attended by senior officials from both the Defence and Education ministries, including Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
According to sources, the IAF will handle the end-to-end secure logistics, from designated printing presses to examination centres across the country. This marks the first time the Air Force has been directly involved in the transportation of sensitive examination materials on such a scale.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Pradhan highlighted the immense logistical challenges posed by the tight 38-day window, the onset of the monsoon season, and the need for foolproof security following the recent exposure of a multi-state paper leak network that led to several arrests. “The government is committed to restoring complete trust in the examination process,” Pradhan emphasised, adding that the IAF’s proven expertise in rapid and secure air mobility makes it uniquely positioned to ensure zero-risk delivery.
Defence officials view this as a natural extension of the IAF’s humanitarian and nation-building roles, similar to its operations during natural disasters and medical emergencies. The IAF is expected to deploy dedicated aircraft and ground teams equipped with advanced surveillance and tracking systems to maintain chain-of-custody integrity.
The development has elicited mixed reactions. While many have welcomed it as a decisive step to safeguard the future of lakhs of medical aspirants, some critics argue it represents an overstretch of the armed forces’ mandate into civilian domains.
This initiative reflects the government’s broader strategy to leverage India’s military logistics capabilities for high-stakes national priorities amid growing concerns over examination security. The success of this operation could set a precedent for future sensitive national undertakings.
