The Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), India’s only tri-service theatre command, successfully conducted a Joint Services Idea and Innovation Competition aimed at harnessing creative solutions to complex operational and logistical challenges in one of the country’s most strategically vital regions.
The initiative brought together personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force serving under the ANC to propose innovative ideas addressing real-world issues ranging from remote island logistics and rapid deployment to maintenance in challenging maritime environments. By fostering a culture of bottom-up innovation, the competition reinforced the command’s emphasis on jointmanship and adaptive thinking in an era of evolving security threats in the Indo-Pacific.
The Andaman and Nicobar Command, established in 2001 and headquartered at Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair), serves as India’s strategic outpost at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Positioned astride critical sea lines of communication, including approaches to the Strait of Malacca, the ANC plays a pivotal role in safeguarding India’s eastern maritime frontiers, securing the Exclusive Economic Zone, and enabling power projection in the region. Its integrated structure makes it a living laboratory for tri-service cooperation, interoperability, and joint operational concepts.
Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), who assumed office in October 2025, personally commended the participants for their out-of-the-box thinking and felicitated the winners. The CINCAN lauded the enthusiasm shown by officers and personnel across services, noting that such platforms are essential to building a more agile and self-reliant force capable of addressing emerging challenges through indigenous solutions.
The competition not only generated practical ideas with potential for implementation but also strengthened inter-service synergy, a cornerstone of India’s broader defence reforms towards integrated theatre commands. In a geographically dispersed and logistically demanding theatre like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where units often operate in isolation, encouraging collaborative innovation helps bridge gaps and enhances overall combat effectiveness.
Defence observers view this event as part of a growing push within the Indian Armed Forces to promote an innovation ecosystem at all levels. From grassroots problem-solving to leveraging technology for surveillance, disaster response, and sustainment, the ANC’s initiative aligns with national goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and indigenisation in defence.
As India strengthens its posture in the Indo-Pacific amid shifting geopolitical dynamics, the ANC’s focus on harnessing the intellectual capital of its tri-service personnel assumes added significance. Vice Admiral Kochhar’s direct engagement with the competition underscores the leadership’s commitment to nurturing a forward-thinking military culture that values ingenuity alongside traditional military virtues.
