Western Command Honours Centenarian EME Veteran

Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh, the Army Commander of Western Command, personally extended warm greetings to Brigadier Wazir Singh Choudhary (Retd), a veteran of the Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) Corps, on the landmark occasion of his 100th birthday.

The brief but significant ceremony was held at Chandimandir Cantonment, the headquarters of Western Command. On behalf of the Director General EME and all ranks of the Corps, Major General Sunil Rampal, MG EME, Western Command, conveyed the Army’s heartfelt felicitations and presented Brigadier Choudhary with a commemorative medallion in recognition of his long and distinguished service.

The EME Corps, often described as the “backbone” of the Indian Army’s technical services, is responsible for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of the force’s entire inventory of vehicles, weapons systems, electronics and engineering equipment. Veterans like Brigadier Choudhary represent not only a generation that helped build the Corps from its post-Independence foundations but also the institutional memory of an organisation that continues to keep India’s armoured formations, artillery and frontline units battle-ready in some of the most demanding operational environments.

In the Indian Army’s culture, marking the centenary of a retired officer is more than a ceremonial courtesy; it is a reaffirmation of the unwritten covenant between the service and those who once wore its uniform. Senior leadership making time to travel to the veteran’s doorstep underscores the priority the Army continues to accord to its retired fraternity, especially those from the technical arms whose contributions are seldom highlighted in the public domain.

Brigadier Choudhary’s quiet milestone thus becomes both a personal celebration and a public reminder of the enduring ethos of the Indian Army, one that values service long after the uniform is folded away.
