In a powerful demonstration of joint services synergy in India’s fight against terrorism, Lt Commander Suraj Parashar of the Indian Navy’s elite Marine Commandos (MARCOS) has been conferred the Shaurya Chakra for his extraordinary bravery during a high-risk counter-terrorism operation in the Kashmir Valley. The award, approved on the eve of Independence Day 2025 and formally presented during the Defence Investiture Ceremony, recognises his decisive actions that led to the neutralisation of two heavily armed terrorists.
The operation, conducted on November 6, 2024, involved a joint cordon-and-search mission with the Indian Army. When one terrorist attempted to break through the cordon from a trapped location, Lt Cdr Parashar displayed exceptional composure and tactical acumen under direct fire. He neutralised the threat effectively, contributing to the elimination of the duo. Reports indicate the operation concluded with one foreign terrorist (FT) neutralised in total, while his Pakistani associate was later tracked and eliminated by MARCOS personnel after attempting to flee under cover of darkness.
This recognition comes alongside the Shaurya Chakra awarded to Major Ashish Kumar of 7 PARA (Special Forces) for his leadership in a separate operation in the Valley, highlighting the continued high operational tempo of India’s Special Forces (SF) in Jammu and Kashmir.
MARCOS, traditionally known for maritime special operations, have long maintained a discreet but effective presence in the Kashmir theatre, particularly around Wular Lake and riverine areas, where they disrupt infiltration routes and support Army units in counter-insurgency grids. Their deployment underscores the Indian armed forces’ integrated approach to hybrid threats, blending naval expertise with ground operations in challenging terrain. Many observers have noted that while Rashtriya Rifles and Para SF often dominate headlines, MARCOS’ specialised capabilities add a critical dimension to Valley security.
Lt Cdr Parashar’s feat is the latest in a series of gallantry awards to Indian special operators, reaffirming the high standards of training, inter-service coordination, and unyielding resolve within India’s elite forces. As threats in Jammu and Kashmir evolve, such operations reflect a robust strategy focused on proactive engagement, intelligence-driven strikes, and minimal collateral impact.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have lauded the awardees, emphasising that these honours symbolise the nation’s gratitude to its silent warriors. For the Indian Navy and the broader defence fraternity, Lt Cdr Parashar’s recognition serves as both inspiration and a reminder of the multifaceted challenges in securing India’s frontiers.
