Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha: India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) appears set to conduct a significant missile trial in the Bay of Bengal, with aviation and maritime authorities issuing fresh restrictions southeast of the strategic test range from May 6 to 9.
According to the issued Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and Notice to Mariners (NOTMAR), air and sea traffic will be prohibited daily between 12.30 and 15.30 UTC (1800 to 2100 hours IST) in a designated corridor extending far into the Indian Ocean. The pattern is consistent with preparations for a long-range ballistic missile launch from the Integrated Test Range on Abdul Kalam Island, the primary hub for India’s strategic missile programmes.
Analysts tracking the activity suggest the test could involve an Agni-III, Agni-IV, or K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile, platforms central to India’s credible minimum deterrence posture. No official confirmation or details on the specific system have been released by the DRDO or Ministry of Defence as of May 5.
The timing has drawn particular attention. The window falls immediately around the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, India’s May 2025 precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan. That operation marked a significant escalation in New Delhi’s response to cross-border terrorism and demonstrated enhanced conventional and strategic capabilities.
Open-source intelligence (OSINT) observers and defence commentators view the activity as a routine yet deliberate assertion of India’s maturing deterrence architecture amid ongoing regional security dynamics. Such tests allow validation of missile performance, re-entry vehicle technology, and guidance systems under operational conditions.
While the DRDO maintains a policy of announcing successful tests post-completion, the scale of the notified exclusion zone underscores the seriousness of the exercise. Further updates are expected once the activity concludes.
