India and Netherlands deepen Maritime Ties, Royal Netherlands Navy Frigate HNLMS De Ruyter arrives at Kochi

Kochi: In a significant demonstration of growing strategic convergence in the Indo-Pacific, the Royal Netherlands Navy’s advanced air defence and command frigate HNLMS De Ruyter (F804) arrived at Kochi harbour recently. The port call, part of the ship’s five-and-a-half-month INDOPAC 2026 deployment, underscores the expanding maritime partnership between India and the Netherlands amid shared interests in a free, open, and rules-based maritime order.

The visit coincided with the arrival of a high-level Dutch delegation comprising Major General (Royal Marines) Rob De Wit, Deputy Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy, and H.E. Marisa Gerards, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to India. The delegation paid a formal call on Rear Admiral Prakash Gopalan, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, at the Indian Navy’s premier training hub.

Discussions between the two sides focused on avenues for enhanced bilateral naval cooperation, interoperability, training collaboration, and mutual interests in maritime security. According to official releases, the talks highlighted opportunities to build on existing frameworks, including recent MoUs on maritime collaboration and initiatives for green and digital shipping corridors.

HNLMS De Ruyter, a De Zeven Provinciën-class frigate equipped with sophisticated air defence systems and command capabilities, received a warm ceremonial welcome. It was escorted into harbour by Indian Navy Fast Interceptor Craft and accorded full naval honours, including a performance by the naval band. Over the coming days, the Dutch delegation and ship’s crew are scheduled to visit key Indian Navy training establishments and Cochin Shipyard Limited to exchange best practices and explore industrial cooperation in shipbuilding and maritime technology.

A notable highlight of the visit includes a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with an Indian Naval ship upon the frigate’s departure from Kochi, aimed at enhancing operational synergy through tactical manoeuvres and professional interactions. This exercise will further strengthen practical interoperability between the two navies.

The engagement assumes added importance as it follows the participation of the Dutch Deputy Commander at the IONS Conclave during MILAN 2026 earlier this year. It reflects the Netherlands’ proactive commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and its recognition of India as a key partner in ensuring secure sea lanes and freedom of navigation.

Defence analysts view such port calls and high-level interactions as building blocks for a more robust India-Netherlands strategic partnership. With both nations navigating an increasingly complex maritime environment characterised by traditional and non-traditional threats, this visit reinforces a shared resolve to promote stability, maritime domain awareness, and collaborative capacity-building in the Indian Ocean Region. As navies across the Indo-Pacific deepen functional cooperation, the arrival of HNLMS De Ruyter in Kochi stands as a tangible expression of trust and mutual commitment between two like-minded maritime democracies.
