Indian Army Chief inducted into USAWC International Hall of Fame: Prominent Milestone in Indo-US Defence Ties

New Delhi: In a ceremony reflecting deepening strategic convergence between New Delhi and Washington, Gen Upendra Dwivedi, India’s Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), was formally inducted into the International Hall of Fame at the United States Army War College (USAWC) on Thursday.

The induction marks a rare and prestigious recognition of military leadership, making Gen Dwivedi, only the third Indian Army Chief to receive the honour, following in the footsteps of General VK Singh (2011) and Gen Bikram Singh (2013). The International Hall of Fame serves to honour USAWC international graduates who have attained the highest command positions in their respective nation’s armed forces.

Gen Dwivedi, a distinguished alumnus of the USAWC and a designated Distinguished Fellow of the institution, returned to the historic Carlisle Barracks not merely as a visiting dignitary but as a peer among the world’s leading military strategists. During his visit, Gen Dwivedi toured state-of-the-art facilities and engaged in a series of high-level academic exchanges.

His itinerary included:

  • Academic Engagements: Participating in panel discussions regarding the shifting paradigms of modern warfare.
  • Scholars Program Review: Evaluating advanced study projects of current scholars, focusing on niche technologies and multi-domain operations.
  • Institutional Interaction: Engaging with the faculty and international student officers to discuss the evolution of Professional Military Education (PME).

Addressing a diverse cohort of international student officers and faculty, Gen Dwivedi delivered a keynote address that touched upon the ‘evolving security dynamics’ of the 21st century. He emphasized that leadership in the modern era requires a departure from traditional attrition-based mind-sets toward more agile, technology-driven strategies.

“The character of war is changing at an unprecedented pace,” Gen Dwivedi remarked during his address. “Our leadership must be as adaptive as the technologies we deploy, ensuring that professional military education remains the bedrock of our operational superiority.”

This visit is part of a broader, high-level military outreach to the United States. Prior to his arrival in Pennsylvania, Gen Dwivedi met with senior leadership at the US Army Pacific (USARPAC) in Hawaii, including Commanding Gen Ronald P. Clark. Those discussions focused on maritime security, joint interoperability, and the shared vision of a ‘Free and open Indo-Pacific.’ This was well covered by Defence Chronicle yesterday.

The induction of Gen Dwivedi into the Hall of Fame is viewed by defence analysts as more than a personal achievement; it is a symbolic reaffirmation of the Major Defense Partnership between India and the United States. As both nations face complex challenges in the Indo-Pacific theatre, the shared educational and professional heritage represented by the USAWC continues to serve as a vital bridge for bilateral military cooperation.
