Dehradun: In a solemn and inspiring ceremony, the Garhwal Rifles Regiment inaugurated ‘Shaurya Sthal’, a hallowed memorial dedicated to its gallantry awardees who displayed extraordinary courage in service to the nation. Lt Gen Dinesh Singh Rana, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, PhD, Colonel of the Garhwal Rifles and Garhwal Scouts, formally unveiled the memorial.
The event was graced by the families of two legendary soldiers: Subedar Darwan Singh Negi, Victoria Cross, and Naik Bhawani Dutt Joshi, Ashok Chakra (Posthumous), the presence of whom added profound emotional depth to the occasion.
Located in Dehradun, the architectural centrepiece of Shaurya Sthal is a striking hexagonal concrete fountain. At its heart stands the majestic Ashok Stambh, symbolising national pride and resilience. Adorning the fountain are busts of three Victoria Cross awardees, Naik Darwan Singh Negi, Rifleman Gabar Singh Negi, and Lieutenant William David Kenny, alongside Naik Bhawani Dutt Joshi, Ashok Chakra recipient. Two regimental crests further enhance the memorial’s dignity.
At the four corners of the complex stand busts of four Maha Vir Chakra awardees: Lt Col Kaman Singh Pathania, Lt Col BM Bhattacharjea, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, and Captain CN Singh. These installations collectively honour the regiment’s bravest sons who wrote glorious chapters in India’s military history.
The Garhwal Rifles, with its rich legacy dating back to the late 19th century, has time and again proven its mettle in major conflicts, from the World Wars to post-Independence operations. Shaurya Sthal serves not merely as a static monument but as a living testament to sacrifice, valour, and the unbreakable spirit of the Indian soldier.
Lt Gen Rana emphasised that the memorial will preserve the stories of bravery and inspire future generations of officers and soldiers to uphold the highest traditions of the regiment. In an era of evolving security challenges, such tributes reinforce the timeless ethos of duty, honour, and patriotism that defines the Indian Army.
Shaurya Sthal stands as a proud landmark in Dehradun, ensuring that the legacy of these gallant warriors continues to guide and motivate the defenders of the nation.
