Israeli forces conducted a targeted airstrike in southern Lebanon on Friday, killing seven Hezbollah operatives near the border, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed. The operation underscores persistent tensions despite a U.S.-mediated ceasefire that took effect earlier in June.
According to the IDF, troops from the elite Egoz Commando Unit identified the group in the El Manzala area, within or near Israel’s security zone in southern Lebanon. The militants were operating from what the military described as a Hezbollah observation post used to plan and prepare attacks against Israeli forces. The cell was reportedly transporting weapons that posed an immediate threat to IDF personnel. An airstrike was called in, neutralising all seven operatives.
The strike comes as diplomatic efforts in Washington to solidify the fragile truce have stalled over key enforcement issues, including the deployment of Lebanese Armed Forces and the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters from areas south of the Litani River. While the ceasefire, brokered by the United States with involvement from Qatar, has reduced large-scale exchanges, both sides continue to accuse each other of violations.
Hezbollah has not yet issued an official confirmation of the casualties but has released footage of recent missile activity in the region. Unverified local reports also mention minor IDF casualties in nearby incidents, though the Israeli military has not commented on these claims. The border area remains highly volatile, with Israeli forces maintaining a buffer zone to prevent militant infiltration.
Experts view the incident as reflective of the ceasefire’s inherent fragility. “This was a defensive action against an imminent threat,” an IDF spokesperson stated. “Hezbollah continues to test the boundaries, forcing us to respond proportionally to protect our troops and civilians.”
The Egoz Unit, known for its specialised counter-terrorism and reconnaissance operations in challenging terrain, has played a prominent role in recent border security efforts. The strike highlights Israel’s commitment to maintaining operational freedom in the security zone even as broader negotiations continue.
As talks in Washington focus on long-term arrangements, including Lebanese troop deployments and monitoring mechanisms, this latest clash serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in achieving lasting de-escalation. Both Israel and Hezbollah have expressed conditional commitment to the truce, but mutual distrust and unresolved territorial issues continue to fuel sporadic violence.
For now, the IDF maintains heightened alertness along the northern frontier, prepared to counter any further attempts to undermine the fragile calm.
