In a landmark development for India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has announced the successful maiden test flight of the country’s first indigenously assembled Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft. The aircraft took off from the Final Assembly Line (FAL) established by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in Vadodara, Gujarat, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s aerospace self-reliance journey.
The IAF extended warm congratulations to the entire team involved, stating that the achievement reinforces India’s growing aerospace capabilities and underscores the Indian Air Force’s commitment to fostering indigenous defence capability under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. This maiden flight, conducted on June 10, represents a critical validation phase following the aircraft’s rollout, paving the way for its delivery to the IAF later this year.
The C-295 programme stems from a 21,935 crore contract signed in 2021 between the Ministry of Defence and Airbus Defence and Space for 56 tactical transport aircraft. Of these, 16 were delivered in flyaway condition from Spain, while the remaining 40 are being manufactured in India by TASL in partnership with Airbus. The Vadodara facility, India’s first private-sector military aircraft final assembly line, aims to achieve over 85% structural indigenisation through a robust network of more than 37 domestic suppliers.
The C-295 is a modern, versatile twin-turboprop aircraft designed for tactical airlift, troop and cargo transport, medical evacuation, and operations from semi-prepared airstrips. It will replace the IAF’s ageing Avro-748 fleet, significantly enhancing operational flexibility along India’s rugged borders, northern and north-eastern sectors, and island territories. Its short take-off and landing capabilities, combined with advanced avionics, make it ideally suited for high-altitude and challenging environments.
Defence analysts view this milestone as more than a production success. It demonstrates the maturing of public-private collaboration in high-technology sectors and builds critical skills in aircraft design, systems integration, and sustainment. The programme is expected to generate thousands of skilled jobs and create a vibrant aerospace supply chain, positioning India as a potential exporter in the future.
As the IAF prepares to induct the aircraft, this event underscores New Delhi’s strategic push towards reducing import dependence and developing an indigenous industrial base capable of supporting next-generation platforms. The successful maiden flight of the first Made-in-India C-295 is not just a technical accomplishment but a testament to India’s rising stature in global defence manufacturing.
