New Delhi: The Indian Army’s Armoured Corps observed its 88th Armour Day with a dignified wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial, honouring the valiant soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
Lieutenant General Vipul Shinghal, Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (Information Systems & Training), led the solemn proceedings alongside serving officers, personnel, and veterans of the Armoured Corps. The gathering paid heartfelt homage to the bravehearts whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire the force.
Armour Day is commemorated annually on 1 May to mark the mechanisation of the Indian Cavalry. On this day in 1938, The Scinde Horse became the first regiment to transition from horses to armoured vehicles, laying the foundation for India’s modern tank forces. Over the decades, the Armoured Corps has built a formidable legacy, participating with distinction in major conflicts and upholding the Corps motto ‘Sarvatra Vijay’, Victory Everywhere.
The ceremony at the National War Memorial served as a poignant reminder of the heavy price paid by armoured warriors in battles ranging from the high altitudes of Zojila in 1948 to the tank clashes of Khem Karan in 1965 and subsequent operations. It also reaffirmed the Corps’ unyielding commitment to national defence and the enduring bond between serving troops and their veteran comrades.
Today, the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps operates a significant fleet of main battle tanks, including the T-72 Ajeya, T-90 Bhishma, and the indigenous Arjun, maintaining high operational readiness across diverse terrains from the deserts of Rajasthan to the mountainous borders in the north.
Such commemorative events not only honour the fallen but also reinforce the professional ethos, esprit de corps, and combat effectiveness of one of the Army’s most potent strike arms. As India strengthens its land warfare capabilities, the Armoured Corps remains at the forefront of deterrence and decisive manoeuvre warfare.
The wreath-laying ceremony concluded with a resolve to continue upholding the highest traditions of valour, sacrifice, and service to the nation.
