Indian Maritime Forces foil poaching attempt near Landfall Island

New Delhi: Demonstrating rapid operational readiness and inter-agency coordination, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) successfully intercepted a suspected poaching vessel near Landfall Island in the northern Andaman Sea, underscoring India’s firm stance on maritime security and resource protection.

According to official information released by the ANC, the operation was launched on April 24 following credible intelligence inputs indicating possible illegal fishing activity in the sensitive waters around Landfall Island, a strategically located outpost near India’s maritime boundary. Acting swiftly, the command deployed the ICGS Rajveer, an offshore patrol vessel of the Indian Coast Guard, to conduct a targeted search mission.

At approximately 2230 hours, the patrol vessel intercepted a suspicious boat operating in the sea. Upon boarding and inspection, security personnel apprehended nine individuals engaged in alleged poaching activities. The vessel was reportedly equipped with specialized diving gear, suggesting a well-prepared operation aimed at exploiting marine resources in restricted waters.

The Andaman and Nicobar Command, India’s only integrated tri-service theatre command, plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the country’s maritime interests in the eastern Indian Ocean. The waters surrounding the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are ecologically sensitive and strategically significant, making them vulnerable to illegal fishing, transnational crimes, and unauthorized incursions.

Officials emphasized that the swift interception reflects the effectiveness of real-time intelligence sharing and coordinated maritime surveillance. The detained individuals are expected to face further legal action under relevant maritime and environmental laws.

Defence analysts note that such operations highlight the increasing emphasis on maritime domain awareness and the need for persistent surveillance in vulnerable coastal zones. The incident also reinforces the importance of Jointness among India’s defence and law enforcement agencies in countering non-traditional security threats.

The ANC reiterated its commitment to maintaining continuous vigilance and ensuring the integrity of India’s maritime boundaries, sending a clear message against illegal activities in its waters.
