New Delhi: In a significant high-level interaction aimed at strengthening India’s defence posture along its eastern frontiers, Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, Director General of the Assam Rifles, and Lt Gen Vikas Rohella, Engineer-in-Chief of the Indian Army, called on Lt Gen RC Tiwari, Army Commander, Eastern Command. The meeting focused on key issues related to operational readiness and priorities of mutual strategic importance. Discussions are understood to have centred on enhancing coordination between the Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force operating under the Army’s operational control, and the regular Army formations in the Eastern Theatre. Lt Gen RC Tiwari, who heads the Eastern Command responsible for guarding India’s sensitive borders with China, Myanmar, and Bhutan, is believed to have reviewed ongoing infrastructure development, force posture, and logistical preparedness in the region.

The involvement of the Engineer-in-Chief, Lt Gen Vikas Rohella, underscores the emphasis on critical infrastructure projects, border road development, and engineering support essential for high-altitude and difficult terrain operations. The Assam Rifles, often referred to as the “Sentinels of the Northeast,” plays a pivotal role in counter-insurgency operations, border management, and maintaining peace in the region. Closer synergy between the paramilitary force and the Army’s Eastern Command is seen as vital amid evolving security challenges, including border tensions with China and internal security dynamics in the Northeast.
Defence sources described the meeting as routine yet important for aligning objectives and ensuring seamless operational integration. Such interactions are part of regular command-level engagements to maintain combat effectiveness and address emerging threats in one of India’s most strategically significant military theatres. This development comes at a time when the Indian Army continues to modernise its infrastructure and operational capabilities across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Northeastern states, reflecting New Delhi’s sustained focus on strengthening defences in the eastern sector.
