Seminar on “Shaping military leaders for the 21st century” concludes at AWC, Mhow

Mhow: The two day seminar on “Shaping military leaders for the 21st century: ethical & value based leadership” concluded at Army War College (AWC), Mhow on Friday.

An AWC release stated that seminar addressed this imperative with singular focus. The broad theme resonated deeply with the challenges confronting commanders at all levels today from counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism to multi-domain operations and the ethical dilemmas posed by technological platforms including AI-enabled systems. It underscored that ethical decision-making remains the bedrock of effective military command. The discussions acknowledged that the conduct of modern warfare, where the lines between combatant and civilians, between state and non-state actors are increasingly blurred and where decisions must be made under extreme time pressure, demands leaders who are not only tactically, operationally and strategically competent but morally resilient. In an era defined by rapidly evolving threats, multi-domain operations, information warfare and the proliferation of autonomous technologies, the ethical and moral compass of military leaders has never been more critical.

The release further stated that the insights generated over two days affirmed that ethical and value-based leadership is not an abstract ideal but an operational necessity, one that determines the effectiveness, legitimacy and moral authority of the Indian Army in every mission it undertakes.

Earlier, while inaugurating the seminar, Army Training Command (ARTRAC) commander Lt Gen Devendra Sharma delivered the keynote address on Thursday. AWC commandant Lt Gen HS Sahi delivered the inaugural address.

About 1000 officers of Army, Navy, Air Force and BSF along with those of friendly foreign countries took part in the seminar while it was also transmitted live to outstation participants, ensuring wide reach across the military establishments. Panels of speakers comprised serving and retired officers and subject matter experts drawn from judiciary, academia, diplomacy, defence research, industry and think tanks.
