Retired Indian Army Brigadier VK Joshi Killed in Dehradun Road Rage Shooting

Dehradun, Uttarakhand: A retired Brigadier of the Indian Army’s Intelligence Corps was shot dead in a brazen road rage incident involving gunfire on Mussoorie Road in the Rajpur area of Dehradun early Monday morning.

Brigadier VK Joshi, 70, served the Army for three decades, survived war and multiple counter-insurgency operations, but lost his life to a stray bullet in a pointless clash between a group of urban Dehatis. A Delhi-registered Fortuner overtook a ScorpioN on Mussoorie Road in Dehradun, which hurt the ScorpioN occupants ego. The ScorpioN occupants gave chase. When the Fortuner didn’t yield, the ScorpioN group of urban dehatis pulled out a pistol and started firing. At that very moment, Brigadier Joshi was out on his morning walk. A bullet from that reckless exchange found him. His friends rushed him to the hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. The life of an army officer ended just because of someone else’s arrogance. As far as the urban dehatis are concerned, I’m sure they’ll be out on bail in no time.

Joshi, who served with distinction in the Intelligence Corps before retiring, was killed at approximately 6.45 a.m. when a dispute over overtaking between the occupants of a white Toyota Fortuner and a black Mahindra ScorpioN escalated into violence. According to initial reports, the confrontation turned deadly when shots were fired between the two groups, leading to Joshi’s fatal injury.

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary police findings indicate that the Fortuner was pursued before crashing. Its occupants were subsequently assaulted at the scene. The occupants of the Scorpio N fled the area immediately after the incident. Uttarakhand Police have launched a manhunt and are actively using CCTV footage from the busy Mussoorie Road stretch to identify and apprehend the suspects.

The killing has sent shockwaves through Dehradun’s veteran community and local residents. Senior ex-servicemen and civilians alike have expressed profound grief, pointing to the incident as a stark example of the growing menace of road rage and the proliferation of illegal firearms in what was once considered a relatively peaceful hill city. Dehradun’s rapid urban expansion in recent years has been accompanied by increased traffic congestion and reported spikes in such violent confrontations.

Police sources have dismissed unverified social media claims suggesting prior threats against Joshi, stating that the investigation is firmly focused on the road rage altercation as the immediate trigger. No arrests have been announced so far, but officials say the use of CCTV and forensic evidence is expected to yield swift results.

The Indian Army and Uttarakhand Police have not yet issued official statements on the matter. The incident has once again underscored concerns within defence circles about the safety of retired personnel in civilian settings, particularly amid rising urban crime involving unlicensed weapons.

Further updates will be reported as the investigation progresses.
