Secunderabad: Lt Gen Neeraj Varshney recently addressed participants of the 21st Higher Defence Management Course (HDMC-21) at the College of Defence Management (CDM) with a compelling lecture on “Bhagavad Gita and Its Relevance to Senior Level Defence Officers.”
In his address, the Gen Varshney drew clear and practical parallels between the ancient Indian scripture’s teachings and the real-world pressures confronting today’s military commanders. He underscored how the Bhagavad Gita continues to offer enduring guidance amid the complexities of modern defence leadership, where uncertainty is a constant factor.
Lt Gen Varshney focused on the philosophy of Karma Yoga, stressing the importance of unwavering commitment to duty irrespective of circumstances. He explained that maintaining a sharp focus on one’s responsibilities, ensuring clarity in decision-making, and practising detachment from the eventual outcomes of those decisions equip senior officers with the mental framework needed to lead effectively in high-stakes environments.
The lecture also highlighted the critical role of emotional balance and composure under pressure. According to Lt Gen Varshney, cultivating these qualities alongside sound judgement forms the bedrock for officers preparing to shoulder greater responsibilities in service to the nation. His remarks were received with keen interest by the HDMC 21 participants, many of whom are set to take on pivotal roles in India’s defence apparatus.

The session exemplified how classical philosophical insights can be seamlessly integrated into contemporary military thought, reinforcing the armed forces’ emphasis on holistic leadership development that goes beyond tactical proficiency to encompass mental and ethical resilience.
This lecture at CDM forms part of the ongoing efforts to enrich professional military education with time-tested principles that strengthen command effectiveness in an evolving security landscape.
