Former QMG of Indian Army Lt Gen Singh passes away, cremated with military honors at Mhow

Mhow: Lt Gen Sher Amir Singh (Retd), a distinguished veteran of the the Dogra Regiment of Indian Army passed away on Monday. His mortal remains were cremated with full military honours at the crematorium of Kodariya village in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, the historic military cantonment closely associated with his long and illustrious career. The cremation took place with full military honours.

Commissioned into the Dogra Regiment in 1957, Lt Gen Sher Amir Singh exemplified frontline leadership and strategic acumen across multiple conflicts. He participated in the intense 1965 Indo-Pak War, notably in the brutal post-ceasefire battle for OP Hill, one of the bloodiest infantry engagements of the conflict. In the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, he served as Brigade Major in the Echo Sector, contributing significantly to India’s decisive victory.

His career spanned command roles in counter-insurgency operations in Nagaland and Manipur, where he demonstrated exceptional skill in complex environments and peace-building efforts, including negotiating surrenders. He rose to senior positions, retiring as Quarter Master General (QMG) of the Indian Army, a role underscoring his expertise in logistics and operational planning.

Decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Lt Gen Singh was widely regarded as a master strategist, courageous soldier, and humble leader who embodied the finest traditions of the Indian Army. His reflections on sacrifice, the officer-jawan bond, and the spirit of the Indian soldier have inspired generations, as shared in recent podcasts and tributes.

The cremation at Mhow drew senior serving and retired officers, regimental colleagues, and family members, paying homage to a life dedicated to national service. Lt Gen Sher Amir Singh’s legacy of valour, discipline, and unwavering commitment will continue to motivate the armed forces.
